Two Men Arrested for Waiting for a Friend in Starbucks—”While Black”

It has also prompted an “internal investigation” from police after there was no reason given for the arrest other than the men were waiting for a friend.

The video was shared on Twitter Thursday by @MissyDePino, which shows the two men being handcuffed and taken out of the coffee shop at 18th and Spruce Streets. To illustrate the unjust nature of the arrest, the friend that the two men were supposedly waiting on actually showed up as his friends were being handcuffed.

The man who showed up even explained to police that they were waiting for him to get there before they ordered. However, they were cuffed and arrested anyway.

As Philly.com reports, the identities of the people seen in the video and why they were handcuffed and taken out of the Starbucks by numerous officers remain unclear. District Attorney Larry Krasner’s office, reached through spokesman Benjamin Waxman on Saturday, had no immediate comment on the incident.

However, witnesses say they know what happened.

“The police were called because these men hadn’t ordered anything,” DePino wrote, tagging Starbucks in her post. “They were waiting for a friend to show up, who did as they were taken out in handcuffs for doing nothing. All the other white ppl are wondering why it’s never happened to us when we do the same thing.”

“What did they do?” asks the man claiming to be the friend of the two men. “What are they getting (arrested) for, just being black men sitting there waiting?”

One Philly officer on the scene responds sarcastically, “Exactly, that’s it.”

“What did they do?” asks the friend of the pair now in handcuffs.

“They didn’t do anything,” responds Depino as she films. “I saw the entire thing.”

As the video went viral on Twitter, it prompted users to call for a boycott of Starbucks and also urge them to respond.

Yep, #boycottstarbucks is trending on twitter.
Theoretically, I don't think they should have been arrested as they didn't do anything else than refusing to leave because they were waiting for a friend. But it's hard to judge without knowing the whole situation. Maybe they were standing in the way of the other customers? Maybe they had a rude or threatening attitude?

Even so, getting handcuffed seems really overkill. You don't arrest or handcuff someone because he doesn't want to leave and insists on waiting for someone.

One time in Manhattan I was hungry and needed to pee badly so I went into a McDonald's and went to use the bathroom before ordering. A security guard blocked my way and told me the bathrooms were for customers only and I had to order before going. I really needed to pee so I told him to fuck off and used the bathroom and then just to piss him off I walked out not ordering anything. He follows me out telling me he is detaining me for the police. I just said fuck you asshole and walked away.

Starbucks is the same. It is about keeping the homeless out.
Still, this can just be being very rude for nothing. There be imbeciles being rude just because they think you are homeless, you know. I have personally met assholes like that. Just because they can... there are such characters.

I think I get it. I think the whole thing was a deliberate act of provocation.

They didn't call the police because the two didn't order anything, but because they were "sitting there waiting" after having been asked to leave (which itself may or may not be justified). This looked like provocation and I guess it may actually have been. They could as well have ordered while waiting for their friend but refused to do so.

Doesn't this look like a scripted provocation to elicit some negative social media response? This works every time, doesn't it?

The clue to what I think this is, is what ThePino was writing: "just being black men sitting there waiting?” which is just fanning the fire, a classic case of playing the race card where it's just a standard case of provocation. Looks like this was done on purpose. And her adding "all the other white people where wondering why doesn't this happen to us"... Yeah right.

They hit the lottery.  They'll get a few million out of Starbucks.... which is good.  Starbucks is about the most liberal corporation on the planet.  I hope BLM starts protesting at every SB.

See what I mean?

How did I know?

It sucks. It is way too strong and tastes burnt. I always liked strong black coffee with no sugar but that Starbucks coffee is horrible.
It's not too strong (not for me, any espresso is stronger than that) and it doesn't taste burnt, it's the taste of Robusta which is not as soft as Arabica, but you have to like it. If you don't, you don't.

Their cups are ridiculously big however, and their prices are too high too. I am perfectly willing to have a normally sized cup of coffee for 50 c less.

Oh yes they do..

Here in Oklahoma we have a high percentage of black cops..some are a combination red neck cowboy hat wearing N word pigs... Corrupt as Fuck. Beat the black or white off of you for flinching.

Their attitudes got them arrested... End of story.

Fuck them and I hope they lose their gimmee money bullshit frivolous lawsuits.

And Starbucks goes out of business.
