The Halifax Explosion...December 6,1917
#1
Its been a hundred years since the Imo and the Mount Blanc collided in Halifax harbour shortly after nine am.  The Mount Blanc was carrying various explosives for the war effort and the Imo had relief supplies for Belgium.  About 2,000 deaths ocurred that morning along with 9000 injuries.

It is considered the largest man made non nuclear explosion up until that time...possibly up until now.

My grandfather survived it. He was cutting school that day. The school suffered multiple casualties iirc the story.
