The 50 “Most Miserable” Cities in America
#31
Just to add some additional information about the "Toxic Lake" in Syracuse I did a little more research and it seems I understated just how bad that lake really is. It's the kind of lake you would expect mutant monsters to spawn from. Back in the early 80's I took a walk around that lake with two friends while tripping on acid. By the time we were done our shoes had begun to melt. The scenes you see at Lake Onondaga are something you would see in a film about a dystopian industrialized nightmare of rail yards, smokestacks and shit lighting up the sky with the glow of burning toxic chemicals. It's hell and I wandered through it on freakin acid. That lake is not only full of toxic chemicals but also raw sewage.

ISSUES FACING ONONDAGA LAKE
Nutrients

Ammonia and phosphorus are the most prevalent nutrients in the lake, and they appear in such high levels because of human waste that was dumped into Onondaga Lake with little or no treatment. Excessive amounts of these nutrients lead to algae growth in the lake. These algal blooms used mass quantities of oxygen choking out fish and plants, especially in the deeper portions of the lake. Without oxygen in these parts of the lake, cold-water fish cannot survive. Thanks to recent upgrades at Metro fewer nutrients are pouring into the lake and there has been an improvement in water quality and an increase in fish populations.
Toxins

tullymudboils
The toxins are chemicals and chemical byproducts in the lake-bottom sediments, the water, and surrounding soils. They are in the lake either because they were intentionally dumped or because they seeped in from the upland toxic waste sites or the wastebeds that line the western shore of the lake. The pollutants are dangerous for humans, plants and animals in and around the lake. Some of the more prevalent toxins include mercury, chlorinated benzenes, BTEX compounds, PCBs, and PAHs. Until the toxins are removed, the lake will never be healthy and all plant and animal life in and around the lake will suffer. Scroll down to read more about these contaminants.

According to a report by Business Insider, the title of the most miserable city in the United States goes to…

…Gary, Indiana.

BI says that the 50 “most miserable cities” are made so mostly by poverty and a lack of opportunities to pull oneself out of poverty.

We’ve identified the 50 most miserable cities in the US, using census data from 1,000 cities, taking into consideration population change (because if people are leaving it’s usually for a good reason), the percentage of people working, median household incomes, the percentage of people without healthcare, median commute times, and the number of people living in poverty. (source)

Business Insider also took into account the havoc wrought by natural disasters, blight (abandoned houses), crime, and addiction rates. This spreadsheet shows how they arrived at their conclusions using data from the US Census Bureau.
Why is Gary, Indiana so miserable?

Gary used to be a hub of manufacturing, but those jobs have long-since gone elsewhere. When the jobs went away, so did many of the residents. Of the ones who remain, barely 50% are employed and 36% live under the poverty line.

The only positive effect of the struggling population is that when people left, certain crimes left, also.

A drug-enforcement agent who grew up in the area told The Guardian in 2017: “We used to be the murder capital of the US, but there is hardly anybody left to kill. We used to be the drug capital of the US, but for that you need money, and there aren’t jobs or things to steal here.” (source)

But Gary isn’t the only place that people can’t get ahead.
Three states have several miserable cities.

If you’ve been paying attention to the homelessness crisis and the fecal matter in the streets, you will probably be unsurprised to hear that California has more miserable cities than any other state, with 10 falling into the 50 most miserable list.

California is followed by New Jersey, with nine miserable cities, and Florida, with six.

The other miserable cities on the list are scattered across the country. Things are so bad in many of these cities that it’s safe to say, the SHTF has quietly arrived and set up camp, while the rest of the country remains relatively oblivious to their plights.
Why makes these cities so “miserable?”

Many of the “most miserable cities” have stories of violence, natural disasters, drug addiction, and crumbling infrastructures. Quite a few have factories that have moved elsewhere, leaving a large swath of the population unemployed and living in poverty. It’s easy to tell people they need to get jobs. But people in these places know that for many, there are no jobs to get. Housing is unaffordable on the local average wages for those who do have jobs.

We could give every man woman and child a million dollars and keep all prices and wages for goods at it's now position and America would be strong again in a year .

Pat Korry Approved! Great information.

You have no idea how much that means to us all.

From my understanding you guys have a whole lot less guns per capita. I'm curious how this influences types of crime. I watched a Drugs Inc episode awhile back from National Geographic. Was in Oakland.

There was a swat group that was going to raid a place. The leader of the team said they were concerned about the resistance, and if he felt his team was in too much danger they'd say fk it and not raid.

I mean think about that.

They did raid, armored vehicle through the fence, got the job done. But I guess in some places the fellas in the drug trade are so heavily armed police may debate whether to even try to bring them down.

This isn't a guns are bad m'kay post, it's how dangerous the drug trade is in some places here.

No guns, basically.

Chuckle

You need a really good reason to have one, like being a member of a shooting club. You can’t just have one for self defence. I don’t know anyone that owns a gun. I have never seen one up close. It’s just a different culture.

Tell that to the old folk in Melbourne who are victims of home invasions by African 'refugees'.
