It sounds like this group has vulnerable people and they were taking advantage of that.

Sounds like Gorean philosophy. I wonder what's on their bookshelves?

What's the difference between a cult and an army?

Personally I think they share more similarities than not and can certainly both cause massive psychological problems. I guess there's more death from joining the army though.

Why I Joined a Secret Society That Branded Me

Last month, a New York Times article exposed abuses of a secret society of women within a "philosophical movement" called Nxivm. The Times spoke to former society members who described coercive master/slave relationships and an initiation ceremony that branded the initials of Nxivm's leader on their bodies. Since the story came out, former member Sarah Edmondson has been called stupid and blind for believing in Nxivm's personal development programs and submitting to mutilation. New York authorities declined to pursue charges against Nxivm or leader Keith Raniere because the brandings were deemed consensual, and Raniere filed a mischief complaint against Edmondson in Vancouver, where she lives and works as an actress. In response, Edmondson recounts over ten years of manipulation tactics she claims to have endured that made it nearly impossible for her to leave or question abuses. VICE reached out to Nxivm—they released a statement after the Times report—but did not hear back.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand must come clean about her family’s connection to an alleged sex-slave cult upstate whose leader was arrested by the FBI on Monday, her Republican rival said.

GOP senatorial candidate Chele Farley noted that Gillibrand’s father, Doug Rutnik, was once a lobbyist for NXIVM and its founder Keith Raniere.

“For Kirsten Gillibrand, the self-proclaimed #MeToo Senator, to claim ignorance about a notorious sex-slave cult, in her own backyard, is simply hard to believe,” said Farley.

Quote:Keith Raniere, the leader of an elusive US self-help group, has been arrested by the FBI in Mexico and charged with sex trafficking.

Federal prosecutors allege Mr Raniere oversaw a "slave and master" system in his group called Nxivm, where female members were expected to have sex with him and were branded with his initials.

He is expected to appear in court on the charges in Texas on Tuesday.

Mr Raniere left the country last year after former members spoke to US media.

This does not appear to be your "normal" cult, and the reaches of this group seem to extend pretty far including all the way back to ... Arkansas.

In this article from the NY Post in 2007:

Quote:In the 1990s, several states investigated the Raniere-run Consumer Buyline Inc., a marketing firm in which members were paid commissions for recruiting new members.

A 1992 Arkansas lawsuit filed by Bill Clinton’s then-attorney general, Winston Bryant, charged Raniere, Cafritz and two others with fraud and business deception. Soon after, then-New York AG Robert Abrams sued CBI, branding it “illegal.”

However, in 2007, apparently they kissed and made up:

Quote:A purported pyramid-scheme operator who was run out of Arkansas when Bill Clinton was governor has reinvented himself as the head of an upstate group accused of being a “cult” – and his devotees have pumped thousands into Hillary Rodham Clinton‘s presidential run.

Executives and top associates of the Albany-based NXIVM group – along with their family members – donated $29,900 to Clinton’s presidential campaign, according to federal records.
