Cops: Jussie Smollett Paid For Pot, Cocaine, Ecstasy Via Venmo App

May 30, 2019

Snip
Smollett’s alleged narcotics purchases are referred to in a police report that was among hundreds of pages of documents released today by the Chicago Police Department. The material details the department’s investigation of Smollett’s claim that he was the victim of a hate crime attack in late-January.

Snip
A search warrant for telephone records revealed communications between Smollett and his unnamed drug contact that began in late-February 2018. It appears that the search warrant was for the phone records of Smollett’s associate.

Snip
During the police probe, a Chicago detective contacted a Venmo official who agreed to preserve records of Smollett’s account until police could secure a subpoena for those documents.

Chicago Police Roll Out Hundreds Of Pages Of Records In Jussie Smollett Case

May 30, 20197:03 PM ET

Just over two months after prosecutors dropped the charges against Jussie Smollett, a controversial move that angered Chicago's police department, that department has released hundreds of pages of records pertaining to the comprehensive case investigators had developed against the Empire actor.
The document dump Thursday, which had been set in motion with a court order last week, offers a fuller depiction of the twisting path that led from Smollett's report of a hate crime to his arrest for allegedly faking that report. Among the new details that came to light with the release is the fact that Smollett has an arrest record — a previous arrest and conviction — though the document does not clarify for what, exactly.
The actor's legal team did not immediately respond to NPR's request for comment Thursday.
In general, though, the heap of booking materials, arrest reports, and other official forms reveal little that hasn't already been noted in media coverage or public comments from Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson. What they do offer is a vivid portrait of what law enforcement saw and heard in their initial response — and how they used those details, together with footage from local security cameras and conversations with the Uber driver who drove the two brothers allegedly involved in the fake attack, to piece together their final conclusion.

Snip
This is not the end of the document release either. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Thursday that officers plan to roll out another 300-plus pages of redacted materials next week, "including hand written detective notes, subpoena records and ancillary material."
And there will be still another release after that.
"The final release will be pertinent video files that require a heavy amount of digital redaction for things like license plates of unrelated vehicles and the blurring of faces of individuals not involved in the criminal investigation. We hope to have that completed by the week after next."

Within days of arrest, prosecutors told cops Smollett would only get fine, community service
But attorneys in Kim Foxx’s office didn’t reveal charges would be dropped against the ‘Empire’ actor a month later, police say.

By Mitchell Armentrout and Tom Schuba Updated May 30, 2019, 5:49pm CDT

Days after his arrest and a month before the surprise announcement that charges would be dropped against Jussie Smollett, prosecutors in Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s office told Chicago police detectives that the actor would be let off with a fine and community service instead of being taken to trial.
But there was no mention that the case against the “Empire” actor would be dismissed, new investigative documents released by Chicago police Thursday show.
After Smollett was indicted on disorderly conduct charges Feb. 28, detectives were informed by Foxx’s office “that they could no longer investigate the crime,” the documents show.

Snip
And it wasn’t until March 26 that news dropped publicly that Smollett’s case was settled just as Lanier had said — with the bombshell caveat that all charges against him were dropped.
That’s among the revelations in the nearly 500-page trove of documents from the Smollett investigation released by Chicago police, detailing the painstaking timeline of how detectives say they unraveled the actor’s allegedly bogus claim that he had been targeted in a homophobic, racist hate crime near his Streeterville home on January 29.

Snip
Police said they still have nearly 70 hours of video evidence from the case that could take another two more weeks to clear for release.
Foxx’s office did not respond to a request for comment on the newly released files.

Snip
Smollett told detectives they had yelled, “Empire f- - - -t, Empire n - - - - -,” and “This is MAGA country, n - - - - -,” poured bleach on him and left a noose around his neck, which he ostensibly didn’t realize until he was walking home after the alleged attack.
Detectives asked him to submit a buccal swab “for elimination for touching the rope,” but he said he would “think about it.”
They also wanted to know why Smollett’s sweater wasn’t dirty, “to which he explained they were on snow and ice.”
The case files detail investigators’ efforts to identify the Osundairo brothers, a pair of former “Empire” extras whom Smollett allegedly paid to carry out the bogus beating.
Shortly after the incident, detectives began combing through nearby surveillance cameras and interviewing potential witnesses, including a cab driver and a ride-hail driver who drove the brothers around on Jan. 29. A ride-hail driver who picked the brothers up in the 4100 block of North Ashland said he feared he was going to be robbed because they “refused to communicate with him.”
The driver and other witnesses positively identified at least one of the brothers in photo arrays.

Here's the lesson in all this...
Don't commit crimes if you're stupid. Paying off your coconspirators with a check. Buying dope with an app. Not the same level of criminal expertise as the pols he runs with
