How is a National Emergency different from Martial Law?

Or are they the same? He sounds like he’s serious about it. Thanks :)

any other country that had 60k people coming thru its border every month would call it an invasion...

the war is against peoples common senses...

Martial Law is curfews...military presence...to enforce...rather than civilians...many others...

The difference (theoretically) is in the amount of power that the POTUS gets.

A 'National Emergency' is a half way solution that grants some extras to the tool box.

Martial Law is an all out suspension of the Constitution for the duration of the emergency.

What I mean is once it’s declared, what will be the actions taken.

One of the things to keep in mind is that during a 'national emergency' the President can take some big steps without approval of Congress. He will eventually have to account for those steps taken but he doesn't have to wait for them. Think along the lines of what Shrub did after 9/11.

We actually do exist in a constant state of national emergency. It's renewed like clockwork. That's how POTUS and Congress get away with some of the things that they do.

Martial Law means direct military control of the nation and Congress has no say in anything until the emergency is over and if any of them are not in Gitmo, then they can have a say in what happened.

Sorry Lily, I’m at work and checking in sporadically. ;) Pres Trump is in McAllen today and he was saying he’s thinking hard about declaring a Nat Emergency. I didn’t know what all that entailed.

Thanks all for your replies. Be back to read them in a couple of hours :)
