Butcher batters his way out of -20C freezer with black pudding after getting locked in

Chris McCabe thought he was going to die after he got locked in his own walk-in storage which stores meat at temperatures of -20C.

But with time running out in the freezer – which is capable of killing a man in just half an hour – he grabbed the only tool he could find… a black pudding.

The 70-year-old then rammed the emergency release button (which had ironically frozen over) with the breakfast food – escaping with just minutes to spare.

Chris said the Scottish black pudding – made by the Queen’s butcher HM Sheridan of Ballater – saved his life.

The father-of-four said: ‘No one could hear me banging because it is outside, round the back of the shop.

‘The black pudding was the best thing to hit the button with because it was the right shape.

‘I used it like the police use battering rams to break door locks in, that’s what I did with the black pudding.

‘It was solid, pointed and I could get plenty of weight behind it. I’m lucky really, we sell about two or three each week and that was the last one in there.’

Chris, from Totnes, Devon, said the winds had blown the door shut after he went in and to his horror the inner door release button had frozen solid.

He frantically looked around for something to save him – but couldn’t find anything to de-ice the emergency release.

The lamb was too big and the beef didn’t afford enough grip, and Chris said he had all but given up hope he spotted his last black pudding.

Chris wielded the 1.5kg stick of blood sausage and gave the green door-release button a whack before being freed on the third attempt.

He added: ‘I had rushed in, I was in a hurry as usual and I heard the door shut behind me, I thought that was OK because I could kick the safety button from inside.

‘I’ve been shut in before and I used the button to get out then, but this time it was frozen solid.

‘I removed all the metal racking around it and I looked around for some thing to hit it with and I came on the idea of using a black pudding stick.

The black pudding saved my life, without a doubt.’

Way to go, black pudding. _ share

These freezers should never have a lock for this reason.

Exactly! When I worked at the restaurant, the freezer spooked me..... it wouldn’t lock, but us girls would never let it close anyways, always a game of twister when in there

The walk in freezers with the push out locks are deadly though after reading this, a frozen lock was the last thing to come to mind. I've been in a few different walk ins when cooking. Nothing but fog and chilly cold.

Black Pudding

Traits

Amorphous: The pudding can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing.

Corrosive Form: A creature that touches the pudding or hits it with a melee Attack while within 5 feet of it takes 4 (1d8) acid damage. Any nonmagical weapon made of metal or wood that hits the pudding corrodes. After dealing damage, the weapon takes a permanent and cumulative -1 penalty to Damage Rolls. If its penalty drops to -5, the weapon is destroyed. Nonmagical ammunition made of metal or wood that hits the pudding is destroyed after dealing damage. The pudding can eat through 2-inch-thick, nonmagical wood or metal in 1 round.

When I was young I was working concessions at this Tractor Pull competition, and they had this big reefer truck where they kept the icecream. Anyway I was in there getting the ice cream and some goof came and closed the door to get in and out. Anyway, there was no way to open it from the inside, how ridiculous. So I was stuck in there for a couple of hours till someone came to get something else out of the reefer. I was really cold just wearing shorts and a tshirt. Anyway, I was lucky and lived through that.
