$100 Avocado Toast

With Millennials obsessed with photographing and posting all they eat to social media, they're going broke keeping up with the "My Avocado Toast is better than yours" trend.

The Cost of Avocado Toast, Explained by a Restaurateur

It’s not really about the avocados
by Ellen Fort@ellenfork May 23, 2017, 10:53am PDT

Over the past few years, avocado toast has gained a high profile, from an avocado-only restaurant in New York to the most recently horrifying “avolatte” phenomenon. It’s why Millennials can’t buy homes. It’s the death of San Francisco food culture. It’s the devil on toast. Somewhere along the way, the buttery fruit that is so deliciously slathered on toast across America, got a real bad rap for being trendy, and expensive.

But really, it’s not about the avocados.

The bourgeois treat is, however, a great example of the hidden costs of menu items, and the cost of running a business with super-slim margins (e.g. a restaurant). The Bay Area is no stranger to fancy toast, avocados or not. But prices in restaurants are rising nationwide, particularly in cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, and New York City. It’s a tricky combination of the cost of living, foreign policy, trade policy, labor shortages, and even more factors beyond the control of restaurant operators.

This was a post on another thread. I waited for it to leave the front page before starting this thread.

Living beyond your means is the motto of most Millennial's and you see it broadcast all the time on TV ads and such, of course they use different verbiage but it has that meaning.

It's all about posting "lifestyle" photos on social media.

This charter jet interior, is rentable by the hour for Millennial Social Media photos, when it not in the air.

Millennials can't cook. You could likely get $40 for one of those in NYC or LA/SF

I have found for myself that i don't enjoy any type of expensive meal in a restaurant as i will 99% of the time be disappointed in the quality and taste of the food, I/We have perfected a quality of certain dishes that are fantastic and there fore normally IF i have to eat in a restaurant I choose only cheaper simple dishes,  Steak is a prime example I know how to pick out a great steak in the market place (IF you can find one) and then I know how to cook it in a manner I like.

I had a famous cooking school as a client. They trained chefs. Working for those folks was extremely educational. When eating in good restaurants, these working chefs would meticulously disassemble the dish and examine it..so, they could learn from another chef's methods.

I learned to do the same when finding a dish i really liked.

Yes, I did read that part, and I realize my previous post was in some respects "off topic". Anon

I have done that too, several times.

One example:
Many long years ago we used to go to a buffet lunch at "The King's Table" (that was when food was still real food, and even the low and medium-priced restaurants had real food.)
Anyway, I particularly liked a Fruit Salad they served, and as you stated, I meticulously examined it and duplicated it at home.
That Fruit Salad is still one of our family favorites, especially at holiday meals.
