"I'm afraid I have good news and bad news for you, Mr. Shelby." Groaning in pain, I wave him on. I can't talk at the moment. My nanobots are going haywire and reshaping me randomly. I currently have no vocal cords. The doctor grimaces and then proceeds with his information. "The good news is that we know what is happening with you now. You've been nano hacked. All of the nanobots in your system that allow you to modify yourself at will are currently running a randomization code. The bad news is that there is no reprogramming them. I'm afraid you're going to have to be EMPed. When your body shifts to a form that you can live with, we'll EMP you to lock you in. Sadly, with the nano still in your cells, this will end up being permanent. You'll never again be able to body mod at will. You'll end up body locked, mortal, and grow old before you die. You are no longer immune to diseases or physical harm so you must take great care in your daily life.

I give the doctor a nod to show that I understand what he's saying as I grow six inches and bulk out to weightlifter proportions. This is not the body I want. I prefer my lean swimmer's build. It's more in tune with practicing the martial arts than this massive mess of muscles. A nurse comes in and sets up a remote mental monitoring station and several orderlies bring in mirrors so I can see what form I am in now as I switch from bodybuilder to a redhead woman that would be anyone's wet dream. This is still not the form I want. While it's interesting to change genders for themed parties, I much prefer being male.

The nanotechnology was first designed to repair the telomeres in our cells that shorten with each division. This was thought to be the cause of aging, and they were correct. Aging slowed to a stop, and our lifespans have increased. They not only solved aging but disease and cancer as well. We are as healthy as gods now with a lifespan to match. Even damage that is not immediately lethal can repair itself or with a small booster of nano. I groan my way through another physical change. This time into a female bodybuilder. More muscles on top of muscles and still not my preferred gender.

Then came some daring bodymod programmers. They figured out how to make the nano change their bodies into frequently disgusting shapes. The furry crowd went wild, and several other fringe groups popped up to take advantage of this new programming. It eventually became a standard feature in the nano programming allowing us to shape our bodies as we will. The only way to tell who is who is with a genetic assay and that technology was quickly developed after someone impersonated the President and went on a shopping spree.

Sports are still skill based, but it's now easier for everyone to participate because they can now shift their bodies into a shape that is compatible with athletic endeavors. They still need to learn the skills, but the physical roadblocks are now almost entirely removed. Obesity has also gone by the wayside. Why be accepting of such a thing when you can mentally command your nano to shed fifty pounds and make you lean and healthy? There are some out there who like such a thing, but the majority of the planet is now very fit. I groan my way through another shift and finally reach a form that I can live with. Male, whipcord lean, healthy, well balanced, and attractive. I hit the button, and a flash of light blinds me for a second. Getting my vision back, I look over the body again and smile. It'll do.

I may no longer be among the immortal, but at least I'm hot. For now. Eventually, I'll grow old and die, but for now, I have a party to get to. "Thanks, Doc. Appreciate the save." The doctor looks disturbed at something he's reading on his compad. "You may not be alone for long Mr. Shelby. It seems we have a pandemic on our hands. The randomization hack is a virus, and it's extremely contagious. No firewall has been able to stop it, and people are randomly shifting across the world. We may all soon join you in a locked form."

The Star Exchange

As I am walking my route, a young human comes out of a house followed by a parental unit of that species. The young human blocks my path which triggers my autonomous response.

"Star Exchange is prepared to receive your submission. Only new and original artworks of any kind may be submitted. Must be eighteen human years old or have parental approval to submit your work for galactic auction."

The young human is very solemn and serious for his kind. "I would like to submit this please." The child is also very polite. A credit to its creator. "Standard rules apply. The work must be your original creation, and for one of your age, you must have parental approval." The child nods and says "Mom said I could." I look at the human female, and she nods at me in confirmation of this.

Extending a pseudopod with a palm reader to her, I explain "The parental unit will place her palm on the reader and confirm that she approves of her offspring participating in the Star Exchange." She does so. I move the reader to the child and explain "The participant will confirm that the artwork is original and it's own creation." "I'm a boy, but yes, it's mine. I made it." "Excellent. Your palm graphs have been cross-checked with Galactic Database, and your identities are confirmed."

To add seriousness to the next statement my programming makes me pause for three of their seconds before explaining, "There may or may not be any bids on your item. If there are, then you will receive payment when the bidding finishes and the product delivered to the winning customer. This payment will be billed directly to your account. There is no cost to placing an item in the Exchange, but a commission of five percent of the final sale price will be authorized as payment for processing. Do you understand the rules?" They both nod earnestly and affirm their understanding verbally when prompted.

"Excellent. Please place the item in the cabinet to your left." The child unrolls a page of paper with what appears to be your standard family stick figure drawing in crayon. There is a house, the sun, grass, trees, a cat, and a family of three in the picture. My predictive algorithms complain that this will be a waste of time as this is a standard child art project across the galaxy. I upload the information and image to the Exchange. That is what my program says I must do even if I do not think it worth the time.

I am startled by the ding of a bid put in. The humans in front of me are surprised as well. "You have a bid of seven Galactic Federation Credits." Another ding. "Nine Galactic Credits." Another ding. Another. They start coming fast and furious. I am having a hard time keeping up verbally so I project a holographic representation for the humans so they can watch the bidding war in real time.

The boy calmly states "I knew it would sell. My daddy would have bought it. There had to be other daddies out there that would like one too." Beyond all of my predictive programming expectations, the bidding climbs over fifty thousand GC before tapering off with a winner at sixty-one thousand GC.

"Your account has been credited with the final sale price of your item. It will now be delivered per our agreement." "Thank you mister Star Exchange robot. We'll see you again next week."

I think you only had the one on there. Maybe in two parts. I'd have to check the notes for the story time list.

And no, I did not think to save your writing from there. Anon

Ignore the formatting.

That was pretty durned good.

And it wouldn't be hijacking the thread. It's a quality read, which is what I'm trying to post.

Alright, here goes...

Finally, Some Tea

Jeremy stood in the arched door way of his small country kitchen staring at the stove. Unbelievable, he thought, it did it again.

Something in his house was messing with him and he was bloody sick of it. How many times did he have to put his kettle on the stove to make a cup of tea only to have whatever was haunting him remove the kettle and turn off the flame?  How many damned times?!

Blind rage pushed past his fear of specters. Tightly clenching his fists, he walked towards the stove, picked up the tea kettle and threw it across the kitchen, hitting the wall a few feet above the breakfast table.

Jeremy’s boiling anger evaporated almost immediately as one of the chairs moved on its own, pulling itself away from the table, making a terrible dragging noise along the stone floor. Cold fear crawled up his spine and nestled itself at the base of his skull, freezing him in place. He closed his eyes, hoping he was imagining it. The dragging stopped, but the footsteps confirmed it was real.

He held his breath as the sound of clicking steps neared, then passed...Heels? A female ghost or was he hearing the clicking of hooves? Demons had hooves, didn't they? He hoped it would not reveal itself either way.  Daring only shallow breaths, he caught a faint whiff of floral perfume.

The clicking footsteps traveled towards the kitchen doorway, crossed the wood floor of the adjoining living room and picked up speed as they neared the front door. Keys rattled then the front door opened and slammed shut.

Then he heard nothing.

Was it gone? Was it finally gone? He stood there and waited. The shadows on his walls shifted as the morning sun rose higher in the sky, but still he waited. He had to be sure the demon wouldn’t come back and try to kill him.  Silence.

When he was satisfied that whatever it was, wasn’t coming back, he made his way to his breakfast table and neatly tucked the chair in. He picked up the dented tea kettle, filled it with water and turned on the stove.

Finally, he’d have some tea.

Sarah fumbled with her car keys, started the car and sped off.  This was the last time she would come back to that house. “A good deal,” the realtor had gushed. “It’s an old country house, in the middle of nowhere, it’s a bit too quiet for city folks, but for a writer, it’s perfect. You can finish your novel, and the price is very affordable. It’s such a good deal!”

It was a good deal. Too good a damn deal.

She was tough, she could handle a ghost that attempted to make tea every morning, she could handle turning off the stove, so it didn’t burn the house down. Hell, she had even made a game of it every morning, but throwing the kettle across the room and nearly killing her?

Nope! No, no. There was no way she could handle that. She would never go back to that demon house.  She was sure next time it would kill her.

Well I never claimed to be a saint and have zero ambitions for political office... Wink

I did save mine to file though. I'll probably try working them around to inclusion in a book once I decide to do the memoirs. Anon

I also wrote out a bunch of smut based on the Grey Wars sci fi novels. I was going to insert them in the appropriate places using spoilers but decided against that. It was too risque as it was. I have some side smut for the Pack Life too. The thought at the time was putting out 2 versions of the book. One that is PG-13 and the other 18+. 1dunno1 It's generally 2 different audiences and I wanted a version that would be somewhat kid friendly as well as something for the deviants adult entertainment aficionados.
