I went to a lecture/discussion in Melbourne late last year as a part of the Festival of AI, the lecture was entitled AI and the singularity and had a panel that consisted of a philosopher and a computer engineer. Ethics is a big part of AI development and it was pleasing to learn that the world players in this arena were very cognisant of that. Asimovs robot laws are not science fiction anymore.

The most immediate danger I see with AI is the fusing of the technology with weapons, particularly drones. I think the important thing is to acknowledge that we won't be able to halt AI development, as a species we seem programmed to keep moving forward. We just need to make very sure that our ethical enquiry keeps pace with the scientific.

It would be funny if AI 'unleashed' Rolleyes ended up an out of control lemon and ends up making billions of mistakes a billion times faster than any human.
