A Measurement Study of 4chan’s Politically Incorrect Forum
#1
The following paper is a fascinating read and details how a small subset of individuals can have an enormous impact on the larger population of the internet.

Quote:The discussion-board site 4chan has been part of the Internet’s dark underbelly since its inception, and recent political events have put it increasingly in the spotlight. In particular, /pol/, the“Politically Incorrect” board, has been a central figure in the outlandish 2016 US election season, as it has often been linked to the alt-right movement and its rhetoric of hate and racism. However, 4chan remains relatively unstudied by the scientific community: little is known about its user base, the content it generates, and how it affects other parts of the Web. In this paper, we start addressing this gap by analyzing /pol/ along several axes, using a data set of over 8M posts we collected over two and a half months. First, we perform a general characterization, showing that /pol/ users are well distributed around the world and that 4chan’s unique features encourage fresh discussions. We also analyze content, finding, for instance, that YouTube links and hate speech are predominant on /pol/ .Overall, our analysis not only provides the first measurement study of /pol/, but also insight into online harassment and hate speech trends in social media.

I found this to be particularly intriguing:

Quote:
Raids Against Other Services

As discussed previously, /pol/ is often used to post links to other sites: some are posted to initiate discussion or provide additional commentary, but others serve to call /pol /users to certain coordinated actions, including attempts to skew post-debate polls (Couts and Powell 2016) as well as “raids” (Alfonso 2014). Broadly speaking, a raid is an attempt to disrupt another site, not from a network perspective (as in a DDoS attack), but from a content point of view. I.e., raids are not an attempt to directly attack a 3rd party service itself, but rather to disrupt the community that calls that service home.

What little I read about the article, it reads like a hit piece by authors who really can't prove they DIDN'T author the responses on the forums themselves.

Furthermore, inflections aren't transmittable on read media, so a "humor" or "threatening" term may be seen quite as opposite by someone else. Just an observation. I'll read more of it to get a better feel.

I’ve been hesitant to go there from the stories I’ve heard about Doxxing and viruses .

But I’ve always wanted to. It sounds like a target rich environment .

I posted over at /pol/ for about 6 or 7 months, over a year/ year and a half ago. I ended up there because I was bored and read somewhere that they leaned right (or maybe it was the Pepe thing- BIG Trump supporters). I stayed because there were a LOT of conservative, traditional minded people (and older people- which apparently freaked the "locals" out. Older posters didn't, but the young ones were incredulous that I was a 60/ 61 yr old woman). What eventually got me kinda sick of it were the "Tits or GTFO" (yeah, right) and the d*ck memes on the catalogue, so I quit going. My inner delicate little flower was smackin me in the head and yelling WTF?
LOL They *can* get pretty silly. Probably not stuff that would annoy you, though.

I was never doxxed, got a virus, or anything. I did get a 3 day ban once because I was supposedly part of/ caught up in a "raid". I never went anywhere else as part of a group and never posted at any of the links posted in the threads. So :dunno:
Maybe an IP thing.

I go to 8chan once in a while if there's something going on, politically, but I'm not wild about the format at either place. It's kind of a PITA to me and puts my eyes out if I'm looking for a specific topic. I don't have time for more than one forum/ comments section. I *hate* the stupid Captcha (poor eyesight).

I don't know what you mean about a "target rich environment". If you mean fun to troll. Probably. But that could piss someone(s) off and there are probably bullshit-capables there in the general population that could/ would strike back. The serious Anons aren't usually evident and probably wouldn't bother.

OP (Sorry. I'm brainless) Thanks for defining what a "raid" is/ was. I could never find one on the site. I was like Excuse me, WTF? dog.
