And what has to happen before a volcano erupts? <rumble> Granted most EQ's are a result of tectonic interaction. But look at Kilauea. Where was the lava level in the crater prior to this latest eruption? USGS might not have even registered it. But there had to be a tremblor underneath to get the show started.

But speaking of Hawaii, hurricane Hector has them in its sights as we speak.

I'm wondering what effect massive amounts of rain pouring into the (still) collapsing crater might have on that overall system in Hawaii. Vent 8 is still pouring out lava and the crater keeps getting both bigger and deeper (checked on it today).

Not sure how far down that lava is but a few million gallons in that crater just might get a reaction.
A mountain tree, if it would see, the far horizon and the stars;  May never know a sheltered place, nor grow symmetrical in grace;  Such trees must battle doggedly, the blasts and bear the scars.

Sorry, but the morning after eating good Mexican, I feel the earthquake. Then the magma is able to travel looking for some pressure release and the volcano erupts. That's how I see it...it's all tied together.

Actually I'm seeing continental drifft in my mind's eye right now. There's your Mexican food that's causing all this!

At least 91 killed as 6.9 magnitude earthquake hits off Lombok island in Indonesia

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake has hit along the coast of Indonesia’s Lombok island killing almost a hundred people, authorities said. A tsunami warning was also issued, but called off a few hours later.

With fresh data coming from the areas badly damaged by the quake, the death toll has climbed to at least 91 people, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency reported on Monday. It said that the number is likely to rise as more information becomes available from the regions that were hit the hardest. Thousands of people have been evacuated, and hundreds are believed to be injured.

The magnitude, initially reported by the USGS as 7.0. was later revised to 6.9.

Recorded to the north of the tropical island destination, the earthquake happened around 6:46pm local time.

The Indonesian government’s geological agency BMKG  initially issued a tsunami warning, but lifted it several hours later. Seawater had entered two villages in Lombok at the level of 10 to 13 centimeters, Dwikorita Karnawati, head of the agency for meteorology, climatology and geophysics, told local television news.
