Ownership more than doubled between 2008 and 2018

Despite some of the nation's toughest laws, the number of gun owners in California has more than doubled over the past ten years, according to new data released Friday by the state Department of Justice.
The state of California maintains a one-of-a-kind database of known gun owners, the Armed and Prohibited Persons System (APPS). APPS combines data on firearm transactions from two different state sources, the Dealer Record of Sale (DROS) database which tracks all transfers made by gun dealers and the Automated Firearms System (AFS) which includes the subset of guns the state requires to be registered, to compile a list of all individuals who legally purchased or were transferred a firearm in California.
Operated continuously since 2006, the program's goal is to identify and seize the weapons of individuals prohibited from owning a gun under state law.
Every year, the California Department of Justice provides a report to the state legislature documenting the number of individuals who have had their guns reclaimed using APPS. That report also makes public the number of individuals actually in APPS, a rough measure of the total number of gun owners in California.

What those data show is that, as of 2019, there are more than 2.5 million gun owners in California, compared to fewer than a million in 2008. That figure translates to about 8 percent of Californian adults owning guns, compared to 3.4 percent in 2008—a more than two-fold increase, even when adjusting for population.

Yeah but:

It could also mean that some people outside of the cities are preparing.

It could be but, most of those in California rural communities who have guns have had them for years. A friend here, who's a Democrat and local rancher, bought his grandson a 22 Rifle for Christmas in 2016. But, those kinds of sales don't account for the steep 2016 spike in sales. It's the left after Trump's election, according to gun shop owners up here. And, they are getting no training from the seller. Maybe AntiFa has a training program for angry snowflakes ?

I'm sure there's a few veterans in Cali to be worried about, but as a group... not really.

Maybe a few but, the vets I know that are young, joined. They aren't lefties by a long shot. But, you won't find them with Trump signs on their lawns at election time. It's just asking for trouble here in NorCal. They often fly the flag, many year round. I don't think their neighbors will confront them over that. But, it's rural here. Drive an hour south to SF and fly the flag and, you'll get your car keyed and other chickenshit bs.
The guns they are buying look like this.

I agree with @Capnron - where is the proof that it is 'the left' that's buying these guns?

No proof, other than what local gun shop owners have said. First time buyers, no training and they're liberals. No proof other than that.

The only reason this stuff is in the local news is because it's weird..

It looks like this is where some get training. Likely other groups training too.

Arming the LGBT community, one beginner shooter at a time

Rex Johnson shows off his paper target after attending the San Jose Pink Pistols beginner shoot.

Note: We’ve changed one of the names in this story because it’s a sensitive subject.
Rex Johnson is sitting at a picnic table outside the San Jose Municipal Firing Range. He just finished a round of target practice shooting a rifle with a scope, and he’s pretty pleased with his accuracy.

“At 33 feet, I have a beautiful pattern that goes one in seven, one in eight and one in the bullseye,” Johnson says, presenting his paper target decorated with small bullet holes.
The gun range is a small, concrete, bunker-like building with five shooting lanes. A crank and pulley system that looks like a clothes line moves paper targets down the range.
Johnson is a bisexual man and he says he’s here for target practice because recently he’s felt less safe. On June 12, there was the shooting at Orlando’s Pulse Nightclub that left 49 people dead. Then there was an incident closer to home.

The Pink Pistols is a national gun rights organization founded in 2000. The group advocates for the LGBT community to learn about and carry firearms as self defense.
On the second Saturday of every month, the Pink Pistols chapter in San Jose hosts a “beginner shoot.” Newcomers like Johnson go through safety training and learn how to fire a
