Skull found in Thames sparked cold-case murder probe… but was 5,600 years old

The chunk of bone is from the Neolithic, or “New Stone Age”, period more than 5,000 years ago.

But its discovery in October sparked a cold-case murder investigation because detectives didn’t know old it was.

The astonishing find was unearthed by a “mudlarker” — someone who scours river beds for treasure — and handed in to the police.

Scientific analysis showed the owner of the skull lived in 3600BC and was a man aged over 18

These old bodies we find are interesting, they show how we used to live, in this case it shows murder was around even then. Sometimes they are miracuously preserved like the ones they find in the peat mud, or the ones that were mummified. I am grateful to have been born into this era of modern conveniences.

Could have been self defense, manslaughter or any of the others.
