My son wants to see new places, my wife is very naive about how dangerous some of these places are. I’m walking a fine line here.
I’ve been all over Central America and it was fine around 2000. Mexico is beautiful but, well it’s gone to shit hasn’t it.
Here’s my narrowed down list in potential order, give me some good advice.

Costa Rica-probably Tamarindo
Dominican Republic-Punta Cana
Belize
Bahamas-Nassau
Cozumel
Cancun-Isla Mujeres
Key Largo or Key West

Or Phoenix Arizona-don’t ask. Facepalm

I wouldn't go to any of them if the trip was free, and I'm not joking.
With the exception of the Keys, every other destination is outside the country. There's nothing in any of them that you couldn't find in Hawaii.

I wouldn't go if it was free or someone paid me. The Keys would be okay. I'd consider Chile or Uruguay. I'm not sure where I'd go. The West Texas desert/ mountains are on my list, the state of the beaches is lookin kinda iffy- but if I had my druthers...
I'm thinking about going to New Mexico later in the Spring to talk to *the* skunk expert, but that's just me. If I were ready to really drop some money- I'd go to one of the islands in the Mediterranean.
Every place is so seismically or socio-politically up in the air right now.
Ever think of doing a cruise that stops at some of these places?

At least you'll be safer on the boat than on land during the evenings

Utila honduras.
I had a couple of guys doing a system start-up in Dominican Republic late last year. They hated every minute of it. The people around them gave them 'looks' and would talk, point and laugh while my guys were trying to help them get into production. The area they were in was nasty dirty. They said you couldn't drive a straight line down the road because of all the trash piled up. In between the houses were steel shipping containers that had been modified for use as whore houses. For miles. Granted, they weren't in a tourist focused area, but that's the heart of what the area has become.

To me, the good ol' USA just has so much to offer that I'd never consider travelling outside our borders. Grand Canyon, Mt. Rushmore, Yosemite...on and on. Plus, there's thousands of less known places that I'd love to see. Hell, even here in the tiny town of Omaha, there's a world class zoo that takes two days to get through. You can cross rope suspension bridges behind a waterfall, camp overnight on the jungle floor, eat lunch and have a slice of homemade cheesecake while watching monkeys swing from trees. After a couple days of that, you can drive through a wildlife safari, tour the Strategic Air Command museum, spend a day at Mahoney State Park and enjoy trail riding, water slides outdoor ice skating (even in the summer). They have cabins for rent...or you can travel down the road a few miles and stay along the river in a series of train cabooses that have been adapted for overnight guests.

If you're adventurous, you can travel west and explore old ghost towns or even further west and hike through the bluffs. It would be impossible with a family, but if it was just you and your wife, you can even rent a Harley from the local shop and ride around some of the awesome rural highways around here.

Honestly, I'm not trying to promote Omaha (it's colder than hell here at the moment lol), but only to point out there is so much to do right here in the US. I haven't come close to doing it all myself yet and look forward to the adventures still out there!
I know a few people that go to Belize and Costa Rica a few times each year. Both of those places seem okay. I have not heard much re: crime in Belize.
Not sure how old your son is or his interests but Bike Week is in March.
