Yep, that's pretty much an exact description for a black dog.

Once the black dog is your familiar you can't get rid of it, but you can invest it in one of your children so after your death your child is possessed and their soul is owned by the dog [they were considered to be demons]. Oppression, Obsession, and Possession were all linked to the black devil dogs. They could be a harbinger of death if you did not obey their commands.

I know that in other cultures dogs of any color were considered to be fierce protectors and helpful guides in this natural world. Some Eastern Europeans had a different take on them.

When I was pregnant with my oldest,I dreamt of big black dogs often. In the dream, my child and I were walking down a dark path and the dogs were on either side watching us. I never felt threatened but I knew if I made a wrong move, they would tear me( not my child) to bits.
There was a spiritual battle going on at the time as many in my family wanted me to abort. Baby Girl won,I talked to her this morning in fact Kiss
I till dream of black dogs sometimes. They are friendly, normally in a family pack. The pups are playful and gentle and the adults protective. To this day,I only have black dogs as pets unless I have a rescue.
What you said about children.... both of mine have big black dogs-sisters from the same litter Cheer
I would have to wonder that if you encounter a black dog then you're onto something.

perhaps the right path, or your near a hidden sacred place that has secrets worth having a guardian.

"A clear example from British archaeology is two dogs found with an impressive alignment of wooden posts at the Flag Fen neolithic/bronze age complex near Peterborough. These animals seem to have been ritually killed to serve as spirit-guardians, at a site which was undoubtedly a major focus for funereal rituals over many centuries. At Caldicot in Gwent another bronze age site provides evidence for a dog buried in a manner which strongly suggests a role as ritual guardian."

I would say that qualifies as an actual encounter!

You're probably the only person on the board to have actually encountered a black dog.

I do believe the dogs in my earlier dreams were guiding me. I'm sure that's why I have such a love for them now and why that would trickle down to my children. Especially the daughter that won ! She's the one who gave me Loki.

When we are is neither Hell or Heaven...it is mix of both, but yet nothing like either.
For some, it is bit more hellish, and for others, a bit more heaven like.
I don't know why our journeys aren't equal in that regard.

But I do know that it is what we do with the Hellish bits we face here that prepares us for the next place...and finally, the ultimate destination after that.

This is a very interesting thread, KilltheCarnage.

That the Devil/Black dogs have been around in ancient lore and in so many cultures, reminds me of the Old Hag/the hooded figure/hat man that has plagued mankind since the dawn of time.

Do you happen to mean, this hooded figure.......

Il Seperatio, kind of god of neutrality from the middle ages.

Should have it's own thread.
